DDP Shipping to the EU Explained: Costs, Risks, and When to Use It

---

DDP — Delivered Duty Paid — is the shipping term that makes "what you see is what you pay" true for your customers. You cover the freight, the duties, and the taxes. No door charges, no surprises, better conversion.

But in 2026, DDP to the EU carries a cost most sellers haven't priced in: the €3 customs duty per declaration line — €5 from November 1.

What DDP actually includes

When you ship DDP to the EU, you're responsible for:

  • The €3/€5 customs duty per declaration line (the new low-value import charge)
  • VAT (via IOSS if registered — or collected at the border if not)
  • Carrier brokerage/handling fees
  • Any customs holds or re-declaration costs — these are yours too

The one thing DDP never covers: nothing. That's the point. If a fee exists, you eat it.

The DDP math (before November 1)

An order with 3 declaration lines, shipped DDP:

  • Duty: 3 × €3 = €9
  • IOSS VAT (at, say, 20% on a €60 order): €12
  • Carrier fees: €5–€10
  • Total "hidden" cost: €26–€31 per order

From November 1, the same order is 3 × €5 = €15 in duty alone — a €6 increase per multi-line order.

When DDP makes sense

Use DDP if:

  • Your average order value is high enough to absorb fees (or you can reprice)
  • Your EU conversion suffers from door charges
  • You compete on "all-in" pricing and checkout clarity

Avoid DDP if:

  • You ship high-volume, low-margin items (the per-line duty kills you)
  • Your multi-line rate is high and you can't reprice
  • Your products have messy HS codes — holds under DDP are 100% your problem

The DDP checklist for 2026

1. Know your average lines per EU order — this is your real per-order duty number (€3 → €5 × lines) 2. Register for IOSS if you haven't — DDP without IOSS means customers still face border VAT 3. Fix HS codes before you commit to DDP — holds are expensive when you're the payer 4. Reprice for the November rate — DDP priced on July rules is under-priced by 67% on the duty component
