Does Shopify Charge Customs Duties? What Sellers Need to Know (2026)
---
Short answer: No. Shopify does not collect, calculate, or display the EU customs duty on your orders.
That sounds fine until you realize what it means: the €3 charge per declaration line (€5 from November 1, 2026) happens entirely outside your Shopify view of the world — and someone still has to pay it.
What Shopify does and doesn't do
| What Shopify handles | What Shopify does NOT handle |
|---|---|
| IOSS VAT collection at checkout (if enabled) | EU customs duty (€3/€5 per line) |
| HS code fields on products (data storage only) | HS code validation or classification |
| Shipping rate calculation | Customs duty calculation at checkout |
| International labels (via Shopify Shipping) | Duty pre-payment visibility |
The critical gap: IOSS VAT and customs duty are separate things. IOSS covers VAT only. The €3/€5 duty is a customs charge on top — and Shopify's IOSS setup doesn't touch it.
So who charges it?
The carrier or customs authority does, at the border. Three ways it reaches someone:
1. Customer pays at delivery — cash or card to the carrier 2. You pay on the carrier invoice — if you shipped DDP or duties-included 3. You pay through refunds — customer disputes the surprise charge, you refund
Why it's invisible in your admin
Shopify's order data shows product totals, shipping, and IOSS VAT. Customs duty is a border event, not a Shopify event. So your margins on EU orders look fine — until refunds, disputes, and carrier invoices tell a different story.
What sellers should actually do
Check your EU orders for customs patterns
Look at refunds and carrier invoices for customs line items. If you see them, you're paying duty somewhere — know where.
Know your per-order duty number
Your real cost is lines-per-order × €3 (× €5 from November 1). Most stores have no idea what their lines-per-order number is.
Decide who pays — deliberately
If customers pay at the door, make sure checkout sets expectations. If you pay (DDP), price for the true per-line cost.
Use a tool that reads your orders
Since Shopify won't show you duty, use something that will. An audit tool that scans your order history fills the visibility gap Shopify leaves.
