EU Duty Audit for Shopify: Catch Overcharges Before They Hit Your Margins

Every EU order you ship carries a customs charge you can't see in Shopify. Since July 2026 that's €3 per declaration line; from November 1 it's €5. Multi-line orders get charged multiple times. Wrong HS codes cause holds. None of it shows up in your Shopify analytics — it shows up in margins, disputes, and lost time.

DutyRight is a Shopify app that audits your orders against current EU rules, so you catch overcharges and compliance risks before they cost you.

The problem, quantified

Two numbers put this in perspective:

  • 67% — the jump in the flat charge on November 1 (€3 → €5 per declaration line).
  • 2-4× — how far off a per-order budget is from reality on a typical multi-line order (3 lines × €5 = €15, not €5).

A store shipping 1,000 EU orders a month with 2 lines per order moves from €6,000 to €10,000 in monthly duty exposure on November 1 — whether the store knows it or not.

What the audit checks

1. Declaration-line overcharges

The EU charges per declaration line, not per order. DutyRight scans your order history and flags orders where multi-line charges exceed what your pricing assumed — the most common hidden cost in EU shipping today.

2. HS code accuracy

Wrong HS codes are the #1 cause of customs holds (5–15 days), storage fees, and buyer refunds. The audit checks your product HS codes against current EU classifications and flags high-risk entries — you can check an HS code here first.

3. €3/€5 rule exposure

The July €3 flat rate and the November €5 rate (€3 + €2 Union Handling Fee) are different rules with different math. DutyRight applies the correct regime to every order and shows you what each order should have cost.

4. HS6 grouping opportunities

EU rules let you group products sharing an HS6 code into one declaration line — cutting fees by up to 73–80%. The audit identifies where grouping would save you money on existing line structures.

What a typical audit finds

Here's the pattern we built DutyRight to catch. A store sells phone cases and chargers into the EU:

  • Order 1: 2 cases + 1 charger, all different HS6 codes → 3 declaration lines → charged €9 (July rates). The store priced assuming €3 per order → €6 of unplanned cost.
  • Order 2: 2 identical cases in one parcel → could be one line under HS6 grouping, but the supplier declared 2 lines → charged €6 instead of €3.
  • Order 3: a wrong HS code on the charger (classified as electronics instead of accessories) → risk of a customs hold, storage fees, and a refunded order.

Three orders, three different hidden costs — none visible in Shopify's order analytics. That's the audit's job: make the invisible line item visible.

No spreadsheets. No customs expertise required. The report tells you what's wrong and what to do.

How it works

1. Install the app from the Shopify App Store. 2. Connect — authorize order and product access (read-only). 3. Scan — DutyRight reviews your EU order history and product catalog against current rules. 4. Report — you get a prioritized list: overcharges found, HS code risks, grouping savings, and what to fix before your next shipment.

When to run an audit

  • Now, before November 1 — the €5 rate changes the math on every order; the audit gives you a baseline before the increase lands.
  • After any catalog change — new products without HS codes are where line errors and holds start.
  • Quarterly — rules, tariffs, and carrier behaviour shift; a quarterly scan keeps grouping and codes current.

Who it's for

  • Shopify sellers shipping into the EU — especially multi-line orders, bundles, or same-product-different-variant stores.
  • Dropshippers — whose suppliers often declare lines in ways that multiply charges.
  • Stores scaling EU sales — where a 67% fee increase compounds across thousands of orders.

Why now

The November 1 change makes the math worse for everyone: €5 per line means multi-line orders cost €10–€20+ per parcel. The stores that audit early will price, group, and declare correctly — the ones that don't will quietly eat the difference.

FAQ

Is the audit read-only?

Yes. DutyRight only reads order and product data to run the audit — it never modifies orders, products, or billing.

Do I need customs expertise to use it?

No. The report explains each finding in plain language and tells you the fix. Grouping, HS codes, and rule changes are handled by the app.

Does the €5 change affect orders shipped before November 1?

No — the €5 rate applies from November 1. Orders declared before that date stay at the €3 per-line rate. The audit applies the correct regime per order date automatically.
