Shopify Apps for VAT and Customs: What to Install in 2026
---
Two EU charges hit every low-value order. Two different tools handle them. Most sellers install one — and miss the other.
The split:
| Charge | What it is | Who handles it |
|---|---|---|
| VAT | ~20% of order value, collected at checkout | IOSS / VAT apps |
| Customs duty | €3 per declaration line (€5 from Nov 1) | Customs apps (or nobody) |
The classic setup mistake
Store installs an IOSS/VAT app → assumes "EU taxes handled" → the €3/€5 duty keeps hitting at the border → multi-line orders overcharge silently → margins erode.
The VAT app did its job. The problem was never the VAT app. It's that no VAT app touches customs duty, and no Shopify-native view shows it.
What a complete 2026 stack looks like
1. IOSS/VAT app — collect and file EU VAT (choose by EU coverage, filing support, pricing) 2. HS code accuracy — correct codes on your catalog (manual setup or classification tool) 3. Customs-side audit — read your orders for declaration-line charges, HS errors, and €3/€5 exposure
Most sellers have #1. Almost none have #3. That's the gap.
How to evaluate any "VAT and customs" app
Be suspicious of the category name. Ask:
- Does it actually read orders, or just calculate? Calculation ≠ audit.
- Does it know the €5 November rate and the €2 Union Handling Fee? If it's stuck on IOSS-era rules, it's giving you 2025 answers to 2026 questions.
- Does it handle per-declaration-line math? The single most misunderstood rule of 2026.
- Does it flag HS code problems? Mandatory PIDs from November 1 make this non-optional.
The one-page summary
- IOSS app: solves VAT. Doesn't touch duty. Still needed.
- Customs audit: solves the duty blind spot. Reads your real orders.
- Either one alone is incomplete for EU selling in 2026.
