How to Find the Right HS Code for Your Product (Free Tools)

Every product you ship to the EU needs an HS code. Get it wrong and your package gets held at customs for 5–15 days. Get it right and it clears in hours. But here's the problem: most Shopify sellers have no idea where to find HS codes, let alone the right ones — a free HS code lookup answers it in seconds. Let me walk you through exactly how to do it — for free.

Why does the HS code matter?

The HS (Harmonized System) code determines:

  • Customs duty rate — wrong code = wrong duty
  • Whether your package gets flagged — wrong code = manual inspection
  • How much €3 you pay — wrong grouping = extra declaration lines
  • Whether you get fined — repeated wrong codes = customs penalty

A wrong HS code can cost you €50–€150 per day in demurrage while your package is held, customer refunds and bad reviews, and potential fines of up to 6% of your import value.

Method 1: free online HS code lookup tools

1. EU TARIC database (official)

The EU's official customs database — the most authoritative source. Go to taric.ec.europa.eu → TARIC Consultation → search by product name or description → browse the hierarchy (Chapter → Heading → Subheading). Pros: official, free, accurate. Cons: UI is clunky, not beginner-friendly.

2. HS Code Search (free tool)

A simpler search tool built for sellers: hs-code.org. Type your product name, get matching HS codes. Simple, fast, free — but not EU-specific, so verify against TARIC.

3. Simply Tariff

simplytariff.com — search by product name, see duty rates for different countries. Free with limits.

4. World Customs Organization

The global body that maintains HS codes: wcoomd.org — look up the official HS nomenclature.

Method 2: look at what your competitors do

This is the easiest hack: find a competitor selling the same product, look at their shipping/customs documentation (if available), search Alibaba for the product (suppliers often list HS codes), or check customs clearance forums. This gives you a starting point — always verify against TARIC.

Method 3: use your supplier's data

If you're dropshipping from China, ask your supplier: "What HS code do you use for this product?" Chinese suppliers know HS codes well — they deal with customs every day. They'll usually give you an 8- or 10-digit code; use the first 6 digits for EU declaration.

Important: Chinese suppliers might use codes optimized for Chinese export. Always verify the first 6 digits against EU TARIC — the first 6 digits are international, but national extensions differ.

Method 4: Shopify's built-in tools

Shopify has basic HS code support: Products → select a product → Shipping section → "Customs information" → enter HS code and country of origin. Shopify also has a duty calculator that uses HS codes to estimate checkout duties. Problem: Shopify doesn't tell you what the right HS code is — you have to figure that out yourself.

How to actually classify your product

Follow this decision tree:

  1. What is your product made of? Textile/clothing → Chapters 61–63; Electronics → Chapter 85; Furniture → Chapter 94; Toys/games → Chapter 95; Plastic goods → Chapter 39; Metal goods → Chapters 73–83; Food/chemicals → Chapters 1–38.
  2. What does it do? Narrow down to the 4-digit heading.
  3. What material/specific type? Narrow down to the 6-digit subheading.

How many codes do you need?

For EU customs declarations, you only need the first 6 digits (HS6). The 8–10 digit national codes are for the destination country's internal statistics — you don't need them for the €3 calculation. Only HS6 matters for grouping. Here's why HS6 grouping is the biggest hidden saving for EU sellers.

The mistake most sellers make

They spend hours looking up every product individually. But here's the shortcut: group similar products first, then look up the HS6 code for each group, not each product. Don't look up "red cotton t-shirt", "blue cotton t-shirt", "black cotton t-shirt" separately — they're all 6109.10, one lookup applied to all three. This is exactly what an HS code audit tool does automatically.

The bottom line

  • You don't need a customs broker for most products — the free tools work
  • Start with the 6-digit code — that's all you need for EU declarations
  • Group products by category before looking up codes — saves hours
  • Always verify against TARIC — other sources can be wrong
  • Use a tool to audit — manual lookup for 200 products is error-prone

Not sure whether wrong codes are already costing you? Check how the €3 duty is actually charged — and how grouping fixes it.
