How to Set Up HS Codes in Shopify: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)

---

Setting HS codes in Shopify is a 15-minute job that saves you weeks of customs pain — find your product's HS code first. Here's exactly how to do it — including the bulk edit most sellers miss.

Step 1: Know where the field lives

Shopify stores HS codes per product, under:

Admin → Products → [Product] → Shipping → HS (Harmonized System) code

The field accepts a 6–10 digit code. For EU declarations you generally need the 6-digit HS6 level (that's what the €3/€5 per-line rules reference).

Step 2: Find your products' correct codes

Don't guess. Use a reliable classification source — see our free tools guide for the list. Key rules:

  • Use the 6-digit international code as the base
  • Country-specific 8–10 digit extensions are added at the border by carriers/customs, not you
  • Match the product precisely — generic codes are a hold risk

Step 3: Enter codes one by one (or in bulk)

Single product: Admin → product → Shipping → enter code → Save.

Bulk edit (the fast way): Admin → Products → All products → select products → More actions → Edit fields → choose HS code → fill in → Apply.

You can also export/import via CSV: the column is "HS (Harmonized System) code" in the product export.

Step 4: Cover your top SKUs first

If you have hundreds of products, don't do them all at once. Prioritize:

1. Products shipping to the EU (check your order analytics) 2. Top 20 SKUs by volume 3. High-risk categories (electronics, cosmetics, supplements, apparel)

Step 5: Verify what carriers actually declare

The code in Shopify is only useful if your carrier/fulfillment uses it. Spot-check a recent EU shipment: does the declaration show your product's code, or a generic one? If generic — your fulfillment stack is ignoring Shopify's field, and you need to fix that before November.

The November deadline

From November 1, 2026, PIDs (HS codes included) become mandatory on low-value declarations. Stores without accurate codes face holds on a growing share of shipments. Set up the field now — while you still have time to test it.
