Shopify HS Code Apps: What to Actually Use in 2026
---
The EU's November 2026 requirements — mandatory Product Identifiers, including HS codes, on low-value declarations — have pushed HS code apps to the top of every Shopify seller's list. Reliable HS code lookups are the foundation.
Here's what to actually install, and what to skip.
The 3 kinds of "HS code apps"
1. Lookup databases (free or cheap)
Enter a product keyword, get a code. Fine for occasional use, dangerous as your only tool: generic results match your product poorly, and generic codes are a hold risk.
Use for: finding a starting point. Don't use for: your entire catalog, unattended.
2. Classification tools (AI or rules-based)
Enter a product description, get a precise classified code — with confidence scores and category-specific logic. More accurate, handles scale, but only as good as the underlying taxonomy.
Use for: bulk classification of real product catalogs.
3. Audit/verification tools (the useful kind)
Don't just assign codes — check the codes already in your catalog against current rules, flag missing/generic/mismatched entries, and tie classification to your order history (HS6 grouping savings, declaration-line exposure).
Use for: the November deadline. This is the one that finds problems instead of creating more data.
What to check before installing
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it cover my product categories? | Dropshipping staples, apparel, electronics all classify differently |
| Does it flag missing codes, or only assign new ones? | The November risk is missing and generic codes, not just "could be better" |
| Does it know the EU per-line duty rules? | HS codes alone won't save you if declaration lines are still wrong |
| What's the pricing? | Per-SKU fees on big catalogs add up fast |
The trap to avoid
The most common mistake: installing a lookup database, "doing" HS codes once, and assuming the job is done. Codes go stale, products change, and carriers still declare whatever your fulfillment stack sends them. The field in Shopify is data — it only becomes compliance when it reaches the declaration.
